Croatian Winemaking Enjoys a Renaissance

Tipped as “the new foodie frontier” by some of UK’s most established food and travel writers, Croatia is just waiting to be discovered…

London, UK (PRWEB) February 1, 2006 -- Independent UK tour operator My Croatia has launched its 2006 specialist-holiday brochure featuring private, tailor-made gourmet and discovery holidays in Croatia.

“Our 2006 holiday programme introduces the Peljesac peninsula - Croatia’s premiere winemaking region” explains founder Vanessa Borcic. “It has vineyards perched on near-vertical slopes in stunning locations. Its Dingac, Postup and Plavac Mali wines are world famous, but you don't have to go to New York or California to enjoy them. Whether served in a bottle in a posh seaside cabana, or drawn from the barrel of a local farmstead, they are available, affordable and amazing.”

Croatian winemaking is currently enjoying a renaissance, from Istria in the north to the Peljesac peninsula and southern Dalmatian islands, as a new generation of educated young vintners return to the land of their grandfathers. The peninsula’s indigenous sort is called Plavac Mali ('Little Blue') and is used to make Croatia's greatest wines, among them Dingac and Postup.

My Croatia’s week-long ‘Vineyards and Villas’ holiday explores the peninsula’s vineyards, wine cellars, and crumbling mountain villages, and includes meals at country tavernas offering fresh organic food. The choice of accommodation includes villas and apartments with private swimming pools and spectacular views of the sea and mountains.

My Croatia’s holiday host and guide is a vintner herself. Knowledgable and down-to-earth, her wine is a bit of a legend in Croatia. Since 1998, the bulk of her prestigious Dingac wines are bought each year by world-famous New York chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich. Only a small amount is produced each year and what doesn’t get shipped to the US is almost instantly grabbed up by wine aficionados “in the know”.

However, you do not have to be a connoisseur or expert to enjoy this holiday. It is designed for anyone who loves food and wine, anyone who enjoys meeting local people and learning about their lifestyles and traditions.

“Fresh seafood is caught each morning and taken for granted on Peljesac” explains founder Vanessa Borcic. “Good food, the gutsy stuff, is to be found in the more hidden places in the earth-driven heartland. Scattered about the countryside and villages of the interior, small tavernas and homesteads offer delicious traditional cuisine, prepared with reverence and simplicity. Home-cured hams and sausages – oven-baked olives and farmer's cheeses - homemade wine and brandies infused with honey, walnuts and carob. Even donkey's milk!”

Packed with evocative images and enticing itineraries,
My Croatia’s 2006 brochure is a must for discerning travellers in search of unique gourmet experiences in areas of outstanding natural beauty.
